Reiki is an ancient spiritual healing method that originated in Tibet thousands of years ago and is again becoming popular as people look for deeper, holistic healing to deal with the stresses and strains of our modern way of life.
Reiki is basically a simple technique for transferring healing energy from a giver to a receiver and can be learned by anyone. It is not based on any one faith or belief system, making it accessible to all and truly multi-denominational. The word Reiki, pronounced Ray-Key, is a combination of two Japanese words meaning Universal Life Energy. Rei meaning Universal and Ki meaning Life Force. This is the energy that’s all around us, it keeps us alive, links us all together and is found in every living thing, from people, animals, plants, flowers and vegetables to crystals, insects, fish ……. the list is long.
I have been trained in the Usui System of Reiki which was founded by Dr Mikao Usui at the end of nineteenth century. Dr Usui was a Japanese Tendai Buddhist monk who found the Symbols and Mantra’s that are now the key to his Reiki system of healing written in some Sanskrit Buddhist scriptures that he was studying. However, it was only at the end of a long meditation and fast on a holy mountain near Kyoto that he discovered how to use them and was able to develop them into his Reiki method of healing. Following this he became a popular and much loved healer in Japan. A few years before his death he initiated a retired naval officer, Dr Chijiro Hayashi, into his Reiki method and declared him his successor. Dr Hayashi opened a private Reiki clinic in Tokyo where he treated patients and trained practitioners, giving birth to Reiki as we know it today.
Reiki not only promotes physical well-being, it also has a positive effect on our emotional and spiritual equilibrium. It simultaneously treats the spiritual and mental causes of an illness, not merely the physical symptoms, thus promoting very deep healing. Reiki can benefit many physical conditions as well as emotional problems, it works only for the highest good of the person receiving the healing and is completely safe for everyone, including pregnant women, children and animals.
A Reiki treatment can take up to an hour and people stay fully clothed during that time while lying comfortably on a treatment couch, or sitting in a chair if they prefer. It is a very relaxing and balancing experience for animals and people alike and blends well with other all other holistic or complimentary therapies. Reiki can also be used to support traditional, allopathic medicine. A treatment is an enjoyable experience whether or not you have a problem and most people and animals experience a great feeling of well-being afterwards. The number of treatments required vary with the person or animal concerned and the type of problem.
Reiki can only be learnt from a Reiki Master, who gives the special attunements that open up the healing energy channel.
